Traditional French Pisé Cobbled Floor

David bought a c.400 year old farmhouse in Aquitane, France from a lady whose family had owned and renovated the property for around 50 years.

It needed bringing up to modern day standards and expectations for holiday accommodation whilst retaining certain features like the traditional French Pisé cobbled floor in the salon (lounge).

The salon (lounge) floor was of traditional “Pise” construction which comprises rows of river worn cobbles set in mortar.

Whilst very attractive to the eye, it is inherently uneven, lets damp through & was very cold in the winter, so we surveyed & recorded the layout carefully before removing the (7000) cobbles then insulating & damp proofing the subfloor prior to re-laying the cobbles & infilling them with mortar.

Finally, in order to preserve the appearance & to make an easy to walk surface, David chose to use a clear resin to achieve the aims.

The result is easy on the eye, practical (flat) & very attractive.

Thank you for sharing the project with us, it's a fantastic example of traditional and modern techniques and materials meeting. David hopes that the property will be ready for holiday makers to book soon on Booking.com!
