Lathe Turned Wood and Resin Vases and Vessels

These Lathe turned wood and epoxy resin vase's are made by first selecting a section of locally sourced wood with interesting grain and patterning, the wood is then turned into a cylinder using a lathe. Dremel tools, chisels and routers are used to work a detailed edge into the piece where the wood will meet the resin. A mould is created in which brightly coloured epoxy resins and pigments are combined with the wood to make a new solid shape for lathe turning. The epoxy used is the GlassCast 50 casting resin with a selection of their metallic pigments.

Some pigments are heavier than others. This causes the colours to rise and fall over each other while the resin cures, creating beautiful swirling and unique patterns within the resin!

Once fully set, this wood and resin blank is turned again on the lathe to carve its final form and finally polished to a glass like finish using Yorkshire grit polishing compound and superfine wet and dry paper going up to 5000 grit.
