Wood and Resin Turned Sphere Lamps

These incredible Sphere Lamps are made from scratch by Vicky from Whitestocks Design using wood burls and pigmented GlassCast 50 Resin.

Vicky uses HDPE mould boxes to produce a blank with GlassCast 50 which she pigments with metallic SHIMR powders and casts around a wooden burl, before using a pressure pot to ensure no bubbles cling to the burl.

Once fully cured, the blank is turned on a lathe into the desired shape before polishing and finishing.

Finally the spheres are mounted on to wooden bases that have been turned and prepared with the electronics in place. The lamps connect to WiFi networks and can be controlled by an app. The app allows the control of brightness, colour using a colour wheel and pre-defined lighting effects and are powered by a USB cable which can be disconnected and used running on the rechargeable battery for a few hours.

These Resin and Wood Sphere Lamps are so beautiful Vicky, thank you for sharing your work with us, you are a natural!

ABOUT WHITESTOCKS DESIGN

Whitestocks Design

Vicky trained and worked as a hairdresser for 18 years but stopped to have children. Fast forward 10 years and add a pandemic to the mix, Vicky decided to try and do something crafty!

While at home attempting to home school the children during Autumn 2020, Vicky lost herself in YouTube, discovering the art of resin and wood turning and identified a gap in the market, turning resin and adding smart lights to change the look of the resin at night, while retaining the beautiful burl in the piece during the day.

From this idea and with the support of her husband, Vicky spent many, many hours researching electronics and apps to see if it was doable. Turning was the biggest challenge, and due to Covid-19 It wasn't possible to try it out first as all training was put on hold. This is when they had to take the chance on it being something Vicky could do.

Next stop was the purchase of a lathe and all the other machinery needed to cut the wood and cast the resin. After many hours experimenting with all the new tools and machinery, designing the bases and electronics holder using a 3D printer, Vicky produced her first of many dragon egg lamps and turned the dining room table from home school to a soldering station! Another area became a photo studio, and another a packing department!
