Getting Started
How difficult is it?
Transforming your existing countertops with a GlassCast Countertop Kit is far easier than you might imagine and certainly an entirely realistic project for any keen DIYer.
For a small sized kitchen with around 4m of worktop (2sqm area), the whole process is likely to take around 3hrs, much of which is prep. Certainly it’s far quicker, and far cheaper than replacing the work surfaces themselves!
The GlassCast countertop tutorial covers the whole process from start-to-finish and has been made to be as honest and realistic as possible. If you have any questions or hesitations, please get in touch with our friendly team and we’d be only to happy to advise you.
What else will I need?
In addition to the resin and pigments included in the kit, the other things you will need to complete your countertop transformation are a hair-dryer, some form of barrier tape and a few ancillaries like mixing buckets and abrasive paper.
To make life easy, a complete set of all tools and ancillaries needed (excluding hair dryer!) is available in our accessories section and just pick up what you don’t already have.
Scratches and Heat Resistance
Although a GlassCast resin countertop look just like a natural stone countertop, it is still a resin surface and will need to be treated properly in order to keep it looking its best.
Scratch Resistance of Epoxy Countertops
In general, epoxy resin is a very hard-wearing material and will stand up very well to normal daily use. Even still, you should use common sense and always use a chopping board avoid cutting or chopping directly on the surface or dragging sharp or abrasive things around on it.
If you do find that your worktops have accumulated some scratches over time, the great news is that they can be quickly restored by flatting with a fine abrasive paper and then polished back to their original gloss with a polishing compound.
Heat Resistance of Epoxy Countertops
Whilst different manufacturers (many from the US) make various claims about the heat resistance of their epoxy resin, we have never found a countertop resin with better heat resistance than GlassCast. That said, it is still possible to lightly mark any resin countertop if hot plates or very hot drinks are placed and left directly on it. The good news is that these marks do tend to ‘bounce back’ after time, often leaving no mark at all or which can easily be polished out if needs be.
Just like a laminate or wooden worktop, very hot objects - such as a pan taken directly from the oven or off the hob - should never by placed directly onto the resin surface because they will mark it. However, if this were to accidentally happen, the results are usually less obvious than they would be on a wood or laminate worktop and can generally be rectified more easily.

GlassCast 3 is about as heat resistant as any countertop epoxy can be and in fact we have done numerous tests comparing it to any other system on the market (including all the major products from the USA). However, although its designed to be as heat resistant as possible, that doesn't mean that GlassCast, or any of the other systems, cannot be marked by hot plates, mugs, or pans.
In rigorous testing, we've found that objects hotter than about 50C can leave a mark on a GlassCast countertop. 50C is hotter than you could realistically hold comfortably and so if you've got something that's too hot to hold then it shouldn't be placed directly onto a resin countertop. This would certainly be true for hot pans off the stove or pans/trays straight from the oven. In this regard, a resin surface is much like a traditional kitchen laminate worktop.
If hot objects are placed directly onto the counter then what you'll normally find is that they leave a very slight ring. At first the ring will be more noticeable but over time (days or even weeks) the elastic property of the resin will start to smooth it out and after a while the ring may become unnoticeable or disappear altogether. If this doesn't happen and you are left with a permanent faint mark then GlassCast 3 is highly polishable and the countertop could be lighted flatted and re-polished in the affected area.
Existing silicone on a worktop does not need to be removed when preparing a worktop. Old silicone like that does not cause any issues with the resin. The only time we would be cautious is if it is fresh silicone. If making new worktops, do not use silicone until the GlassCast project is complete, at which time you can seal any gap between the tiles and resin surface, much like you would with a normal worktop.
Absolutely love my resin countertops, they've totally transformed the kitchen. I was really surprised by how not difficult the process was, I really did expect that it would turn out very different from what you see in the photos or videos online but I think my result is just as good. The only problem I had was taking a little bit too long getting some of the colours down, I had one pot where the resin went like jelly and I couldn't use it but in the end it didn't need it and I love the end result to maybe it was fate! Definitely a 5 star review from me :) Thanks.
Writing this review about the Glasscast resin for countertops. We made our own 'rose quartz' countertops before this kit was available, using advice and recommendations from Matt at Glasscast. He gave us the same suggestion of pigments and the shimmer powders to make these pink counters. Our counters are in a nail bar and beauty salon and look absolutely amazing. We use glass mats underneath the clients hands to prevent damage to the tops from various chemicals but actually they seem to hold up very well. Love the look this resin and pigments give, the glitter and sparkle is just amazing.
