GlassCast resin petri dish art starter kits are perfect for makers and crafters wishing to make their own alcohol ink petri dish pieces, which can be used as coasters or mini art pieces.

The kit uses premium quality GlassCast 10 epoxy casting resin which is the perfect clear epoxy for this application; easy to use, incredibly clear, self degassing, high gloss resin surface that is hard-wearing and UV resistant and easy to machine if required.

The kit includes four Pinata Alcohol Inks in particular the white - Blanco Blanco which causes the other colours to sink in the resin creating stunning effects, a silicone petri dish mould with three cavities and the accessories needed to complete the project.

Kit Contents

  • GlassCast 10 500g - epoxy casting resin and hardener
  • Silicone Petri Dish Mould
  • Pinata Blanco Blanco 0.5oz
  • Pinata Sunbright Yellow 0.5oz
  • Pinata Senorita Magenta 0.5oz
  • Pinata Baja Blue 0.5oz
  • Mixing Pots and Sticks
  • 2 pairs of Nitrile Gloves

How to Create Petri Art

It’s really easy to get started making Petri Dish Art with this handy kit and free instructional guide available in the download section on the left of this page. The inks are ready to use straight out of the 0.5oz bottles which have a handy dropper top.

To create your own pieces following this simple step-by-step guide.

Prepare the GlassCast 10 and pour into the silicone moulds

Leave to stand for around 20 minutes – this will allow any bubbles to pop and the resin to become less viscous which changes the flow of the ink in the resin.

The Blanco Blanco – White alcohol ink is very important in the petri technique. The white alcohol ink helps the other colours move around – or sink in the resin and is a must when using this technique to create the tubular effects like a mini coral reef!

Drip the ink into the resin at a ratio of 1 part white to 2 parts colour, the white is a heavier pigment and will push down the coloured ink.

The amount of ink you require will depend upon the effect you are trying to create, if you want to have areas of clear resin, use less ink.

Now leave to cure

How much do I need?

The amount of alcohol ink you need for a project depends on the effect you are aiming for. If you are creating petri art it’s advisable to work to this approximate guide:

  • Coasters (10cm diameter): 40 drips total
  • Placemats (20cm diameter): 140 drips total

Flammability

Please be aware that being alcohol based, these alcohol inks are highly flammable – do not use a blow torch or use a heat gun on the inks and avoid any naked flames.

What else will I need?

In addition to the kit contents, you may wish to have the following items to hand; cocktail sticks and something to cover your mould whilst the resin cures.
